The creme de la creme of non-toxic lipsticks

May 12, 2016

Forgive me for the lack of posts this week. I have been working on a job that  keeps me away from home for 12 hours on some days, a husband who was on the road and a toddler with 103 degree fever. Needless to say life has been a little crazy around here and the blog was last on the priority list. When life gets hectic like that it’s so hard to find a moment for myself. Self-care certainly falls by the wayside. It’s a miracle if I can find five minutes to take a shower or a poop. TMI? Sorry. My point is that at times like this we have to find small ways to feel human and presentable even when it’s been three days since our last shower…..or poop for that matter. Ok, I’m done! This brings me to the topic of this post! Lipstick! I am not one of those lucky ladies that was blessed with a lot of natural lip color. So for me if I want to look less like I slept three hours with a cranky, sweaty toddler draped across my chest, and more like one of those bright-eyed blissful ladies in a Lunesta ad waking with the sun after a full nights sleep, then lipstick is a non-negotiable. It helps me to look refreshed and like I put an ounce of effort into my appearance. If you read my post on how to make Beetroot lip balm, then you already know the dangers of your average conventional lipsticks. They contain may toxic ingredients including carcinogenic metals like cadmium, arsenic, chromium and sometimes even lead. And don’t even get me started on the petrochemicals, parabens and phthalates. Our cosmetic industry is grossly unregulated. I have been on a quest to find great non-toxic lipsticks that look and feel just as good as my old conventional favorites and I’m happy to say I have found a few that are actually even BETTER. These lipsticks are all completely non-toxic and some are even certified organic. You can lick these off your lips till the cows come home. It’s a new day for non-toxic and organic make-up. No longer do we have to settle for an inferior product in the name of our health and wellbeing. Here are the companies leading the charge, and some of the most kick ass lipsticks around.

Non-toxic Lipsticks

  1. Ilia – Ilia’s lipsticks are made with 85% bioactive organic ingredients. These are such a fantastic everyday lipstick because they feel like a nourishing lip balm. They are so hydrating and moisturizing, and not sticky in any way. They go on smooth making your lips look supple, and they come in the raddest on trend colors. A must have. The lipstick colors above are Arabian Knights, Lust for Life, and the lip gloss is Gypsy.
  2. Kajaer Weis– Kajaer Weis lip tints are certified organic and come in beautiful colors. The company has complete transparency and on it’s website it lists all the ingredients used, why they are used and how they are sourced. This is luxury lipstick at it’s finest. The pigments are deep and rich, and it feels lush and moisturizing. One of the GREATEST things about this brand is the packaging. They come in these beautiful modern sleek metal compacts with a mirror on the inside lid. Remember those lip smacker tins? Kind of like that if they had been designed by some spectacular architect or Parisian Couturier. It’s meant to be kept forever, and the company makes refill pans in simple paper boxes that are totally recyclable. They left no stone unturned in being healthy, green and luxurious. The color above is Goddess.
  3. W3ll People– W3ll People pays close attention to their ingredients eschewing petrochemicals and fillers and opting for ingredients like organic aloe and essential oils. I love their Universalist Multi-stick which can be used for the lips, cheeks and eyes! It’s all you need! They are gluten free, non GMO and sustainable. It goes on smooth with a satin finish, so not at all greasy. The one pictured above is Universalist Multi-stick 1 and I use it on my lips, cheeks and eyes for a dewy look.
  4. 100% Pure–  True to it’s name, 100% Pure is actually just that. It is made with organic ingredients and no synthetic chemicals, parabens, phthalates, or fragrances. They use fruit pigments for their color, and when I was pregnant this was pretty much all I would wear. They have an amazing mascara made with pigment from blackberries by the way. The color above is the Fruit Pigmented Lip Butter in Pomegranate.

So we can no longer use the excuse that organic makeup doesn’t perform as well. Here are four brands that are as good if not better than all of the conventional brands we’ve been wearing. Our skin is our largest organ and 60% of what we put on it is absorbed into the body. With lipstick that percentage is even higher because we eat it all day long! Do your beautiful body a favor and check out these lipsticks, your body will thank you and I’m guessing you (like me), will find them superior to a lot of your lifelong favorites.
